Android apps come to Macs

" "

A company that already lets you use Android applications on a desktop PC is now doing the same for Mac users. BlueStacks is able to bridge the technical gap between the various systems, but will only do so with the authorization of the app developer.

The process of bringing Android games to desktop computers is more complicated than the technical equivalent of translating a language. Many Android apps are specifically written to run on mobile devices running ARM-based processor, while PCs usually run x86 processors. While developers must give permission, they don’t need to do any work to have the game “converted” for use in BlueStacks.

To use the BlueStacks system on either PC or Mac, you need to download its free App Player software. From here you can download any apps that have been made available by the developers. The current set-up has no payment system and thus only works with free applications. It’s likely this will change in the long term.

For people who also have an Android device, there’s a mobile application called Cloud Connect that allows you to copy across any apps you’ve downloaded to your PC or Mac.

At the moment there are only 17 applications available to run on the Mac, though other developers are said to be in discussions. Perhaps the highest profile app that’s already available is Pulse’s newsreader. If the PC lineup is anything to go by, games are likely to be the most popular downloads to desktops.

The PC version of BlueStacks recently received a boost with news that Asus will include a copy on around 30 million new PCs. Buyers will get six months free access to a wide range of Android apps, though this will be cut to 50 free titles if they don’t subscribe after that
