Archos unveils new line of XS tablets

" "

Archos has unveiled its new line of XS tablets, with the Gen10 101XS tablet being the first to become available. The Gen10 97XS and Gen10 80XS will then follow.

The Gen10 XS series comprises the 101XS, the 97XS, and the 80XS. The names relating to the screen sizes of each of these tablets. The 101XS is the only one that Archos is reveling the specs for, with the 97XS and 80XS being listed as, “Coming Soon.” So that’s the tablet we should take a more-detailed look at to get a taste for what Archos is offering.

The Archos Gen10 101XS comes with stock Android 4.0 (upgradeable to 4.1), has a 10.1-inch screen with 1280×800 pixels, is just 8mm thick and weighs 600g. It’s powered by a 1.5Ghz ARM Cortex processor, has 1GB of RAM and 16GB of flash storage, and comes with a microSD slot, a mini HDMI slot, and all the usual extras. It also comes with a magnetic keyboard cover and kickstand.

The tablet market is in a position whereby there is one obvious leader and a host of other companies and devices staking claims for even small pieces of the pie. Apple has led the tablet market from the beginning with the iPad, and continues to do so. And then there are the brilliant Android tablets such as the Asus Transformer series and the Nexus 7 from Google. And not forgetting the budget Amazon Kindle Fire with its built-in content hub.

What this means is tablets such as the Gen10 XS range from Archos are stuck in the middle, struggling to gain any kind of attention. But that could be a mistake on this occasion, as the new Archos tablets look good, at least on paper. We won’t know how they perform in the real world until they’re in the hands of consumers and the reviews start to roll in.
