Those looking forward to Apple announcing their much-anticipated iPad Mini alongside the iPhone 5 on Sept. 12 shouldn’t get their hopes up until October.
AllThingsD, the technology blog of the Wall Street Journal, has confirmed rumors that Apple would announce its smaller, 7.85-inch screen tablet at a second media event in October. An actual date has yet to be confirmed.
“Apple’s next generation iPhone and its so-called ‘iPad Mini‘ will debut at two separate events this fall, rather than a single one as has been widely speculated, according to several sources…,” according to the report. “Only after the next generation iPhone is out the door and on sale will Apple announce the smaller iPad it’s been working on. That device, which is expected to have a display of less than eight inches, will be uncrated at a second special event, which sources said is currently scheduled for October.”
That report lines up with speculation from Blorge that Apple wouldn’t release both highly-anticipated products at the same time.
After that report published, the Japanese blog Macotakara, claims that the actual name of the tablet — iPad Mini — will indeed be the name of the device.
According to Macotakara’s Asian source, the smaller iPad will have “iPad Mini” printed on the back on the device.
Apple threw everyone for a loop when it released its third-generation iPad as simple the “New iPad.” Most rumor sites assumed it would be named the iPad 3, following Apple’s product-naming history.
It’s still up for debate if the iPhone 5 will be called just that or simply called the new iPhone.
The iPad Mini is expected to feature a 7.85-inch non-Retina display and be significantly thinner than Apple’s current, 10-inch iPad.
While there has been much debate around whether or not Apple should release a smaller iPad, the tablet will direct completely against Amazon’s Kindle, Barnes & Noble’s Nook Tablet and Google’s Nexus 7.
