Lenovo’s Windows 8 Thinkpad tablet leaks

" "

Lenovo’s first Windows 8 tablet has leaked, with all the specs and a load of different images finding their way on to the InterWebs.

Windows 8 has now been confirmed as releasing on Oct 26, 2012, which means we’re going to see details of a lot of new products sporting Microsoft’s latest operating system being revealed over the next two months. Some will be unveiled intentionally, while others will be leaked thanks to the power of the Web. As is the case with the Thinkpad Tablet 2 from Lenovo.

The Tablet 2 (a name that will inevitably change before release) features a 10.1-inch WXGA touchscreen, a dual-core Intel Clover Trail processor, 2GB of RAM and 64GB of internal memory. In other words it’s a beast. The device also comes with a stylus as an optional input, and a keyboard dock that looks similar to the one sported by the Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime.

In the leaked document Lenovo concedes that it will be hard to compete with the Apple iPad but offers up the Tablet 2 as a business model. The same can be said for all of the tablets powered by Windows 8 that are likely to flood onto the market in the 12 months following its launch, as Windows is more capable of powering office apps and content creation than the iPad and iOS.

One thing missing from the leak is pricing and release details. There is speculation the Lenovo Thinkpad Tablet 2 will be available at around the same time as Windows 8 itself. The pricing will be all-important, sadly I cannot see this device being able to match Apple’s on that score. In fact, I suspect we’ll have to wait a year or two for the price of Windows 8 tablets to drop to iPad levels.

The Lenovo Thinkpad Tablet 2 looks good both on paper and on the visual front, but until we’ve all used Windows 8 tablets no one can say whether they’ll actually be any good or not. Sadly I doubt whether Apple is losing any sleep.
